Do it Yourself: Tiny Battery Lamp

Here’s another product which was probably designed by someone completely bored. This is what I imagine under funny but completely useless product - special Do It Yourself Battery Lamp. Yeah, it’s like LEGO, but you need an extra 9V battery here. The rest is simple - buy one of tens various designes and build your own mini lamp. Sold as “Designer Emulation Kit,” this kit consist of a series of flat pieces that you remove from the printed circuit board, assemble, and hook up to a 9-volt battery. The price is set to 26 bucks per piece, so it won’t ruin your wallet but there are also more useful things you can buy for these money…

Microsoft sold one million Zunes

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, confirmed in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle that the company has cleared the million mark. While he said that “a little over a million Zunes” translate into a 10% market share in the category of hard-disk-based digital audio players, Bach conceded that it wasn’t quite an “overwhelming” start: “I’m not going to pretend it’s some gigantic move,” he told the Chronicle.

However, Microsoft did reach its initial goal outlined last December by former VP Bryan Lee. At the time, Lee considered one million Zunes within a nine-month timeframe as potentially “awesome”. Compared to its rival, Apple’s iPod, Zune in fact appears to have done reasonably well: It took the iPod nearly two years to reach the one-million milestone. But, in fairness, the iPod launched in a time (2001) when the portable MP3 player was a toy for geeks and the market opportunity was hardly more than a niche. Microsoft, on the other side, launched Zune in a booming market and, in this perspective, a million sold devices suddenly do not look that “awesome” anymore. Zune has been in the market for 193 days (November 14, 2006 to May 25, 2007) in the U.S. market – which translates into about 5200 Zunes sold per day. About 30,000 stores in the U.S. are currently selling the player, which means that, on average, each store sold about 33 Zunes during this 193 day period – or one Zune every six days. Anyway, it’s still far away from promised iPod killer…

Intel builds boards with SIS chipsets

INTEL IS TO BUY in a bunch of SIS chips to launch two new low-end desktop boards.

In a bid to further diversify its range of products and to spend less time worrying about the razor-thin-margins in the low end of the motherboard market, Intel will buy in the SiS671 and 672 chipsets, according to China's Economic Daily News.

This news comes on the back of another announcement from SiS that its chipsets would be included in a new low-cost PC from Dell. That's lower cost, in fact, since the cheaper-than-Dell Dell machine will be designed for so-called emerging markets.

Between the Dell order and Intel's new-found desire to stop fiddling with cheapo chipsets, SiS should see its chipset shipments climb about 50%, according to sources. That rather indicates how few it was shipping in the first place. Honestly, who do you know that has a SiS chipset in their machine?

Like Intel's low-end parts, the 672 and 671 both have integrated graphics functionality, although performance is even worse than Intel's graphics core (yes, we never thought we'd say that either).

And what’s more, FC Barcelona’s world-class midfielder, and two-time FIFA World Player of the year, Ronaldinho, will feature on the front pack of the game, together with other soccer greats from select teams around the world. The soccer stars to feature along with Ronaldinho include: rising star, Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid; 2006 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner, Miroslav Klose of Werder Bremen, Germany; attacking midfielder and captain of Andreas Ivanschitz of Panathinaikos FC, Austria; Tranquillo Barnetta of Bayer Leverkusen, Switzerland; midfielder Florent Malouda of Olympique Lyonnais; and winger Frank Ribery of Olympique.

Sony sued for Blu-Ray patent infringement

Still reeling over its patent lawsuit with Immersion Corporation over the Playstation rumble technology, another tech firm has sued Sony because it claims Sony’s Blu-ray Disc infringes on its patents. Target Technology Company claims that it holds a patent for reflective layer materials in optical discs, and that Blu-ray Discs use the same technology without TTC’s permission. TTC alleges that its patent, which was filed in April 2004 and approved in March 2006, was deliberately and willfully infringed. It is seeking unspecified monetary damages and a permanent injunction against Sony. Although other companies are also responsible for BD replication, the suit only names Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures, and Sony DADC as the defendants. Several months ago, Sony faced a similar patent headache over the Dual Shock rumble feature used in its Playstation and Playstation 2 controllers. Immersion Corporation claimed it owned patents that were used in the creation of the technology, leading Sony to pay $97 million in damages. Target does not specify in its suit whether it believes all of Sony’s Blu-ray discs infringe on its patent, or the suit applies to just a portion of the discs manufactured. The patent was filed in April of 2004 and granted in March of 2006. Yeah, developing new technologies doesn’t have to be that easy as it looks…

DriverMax

Now re-installing Windows is even more easier

Well after a re-install of Windows we all have to install the drivers manually, which can be quite boring sometimes. Also I have seen many users don't have the original mobo cd's to install the drivers and don't have updated drivers as well.

But now with DriverMax, all such worries is solved. DriverMax is a new program which allows you to easily reinstall all your Windows drivers. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Simply export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!

The Export Wizard will only export the drivers you select by copying the needed files to a folder or a compressed ZIP file.
After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.

Just one single computer restart will be required after all drivers are reinstalled!

DriverMax is able to display a complete report of all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. This feature can also be very useful when you want to analyze the differences between the drivers installed on different machines.

And what's more it works correctly in Vista too (You have to run it in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode).

The HP HDX series, which is the newest addition to the firm's Pavilion notebook line-up, is a 20.1-inch entertainment notebook aimed at the region's media buffs, casual and mid-level gamers, and performance seekers. To fit with the dragon theme, HP has featured a dragon-inspired imprint design on all the notebooks in the series.

At the summit, which was attended by Windows Middle East, Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's Personal Systems Group demonstrated the HDX's features, including a dual hinge - similar to Dell's XPS M2010 - that allows users to move or tilt the screen for optimal viewing, plus a Media Center remote control, which can be stored in the keyboard deck.

On the performance front, the HDX features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a ATI Radeon X2600 XT graphics card with 512Mbytes of graphics memory. HP's entry-level Dragon model boasts two 200Gbyte hard drives but supports up to 500Gbytes of storage. The notebook also features Altec Lansing audio supported by four integrated speakers and a sub woofer.

Optional features include a HD DVD drive, SuperMulti DVD+R/RW double layer drive and a TV tuner capable of capturing HD content.

The HP Pavilion HDX will be sold in the Middle East in the next few months and pricing starts at US $2999.

At the summit, the firm also unveiled three more additions to the Pavilion series, including the $999 dv2000 Entertainment series, which features a 14.1-inch widescreen LCD, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and HP's own QuickPlay software. This software allows users to watch movies or listen to music instantly without having to boot up their Windows OS.

Update:- Optimus OLED keyboard

ALMOST TWO YEARS after Art Lebedev studio announced its Optimus keyboard concept, the project is now coming into the commercial arena.

Even though much can be said about the changes developers made to the project, one cannot deny that this design is something that PC industry needed.

The price is set at staggering $1564, and pre-orders will commence on May 20th. Estimated time of delivery is set for autumn this year, and we can say almost for sure that those guys will sell out first batch completely.

Optimus Maximus in all of its OLED glory. Then again, the original concept was somewhat more daring

This might be an expensive one, but when did you last hear about a keyboard that has active (luckily, silent) cooling?

Sony’s new E-series MP3 player

Sony’s brand-spanking-new E-series MP3 players , and it really is quite special. It feels like a lipstick, but it’ll play considerably more music.

The cap on one end handily pops off to reveal a USB plug and the opposite end has a 3.5mm headphone socket. There’s a small, rather pixellated, but really useful colour screen that seems to float graciously under the glossy surface of the player.

t’s a really lightweight player, but its rugged build quality gives it a distinctly substantial feel. Sound quality is excellent from what we’ve heard so far, and with 30 hours of battery life, that music will keep pumping long enough for most people.

Change Start logo in Xp

Change Start logo in Xp
I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.

First of all just u need to do is download Resource hacker.

Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems.

ll its just 541Kb in the size.. click here to go to the download Page

Download Resource Hacker

First Step

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe
The category we are going to be using is String Table In Resource Hacker. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry

Second Step – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

the right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

u can of course change the text of other Baloon Items , My Computer Name, Favorites and so on many more..

Apple has just announced the availability of its iPod Shuffle music player in five different colors. As pictured above, the small trendy clip player will be available in colors of green, pink, orange, blue and silver. The Shuffle has a storage capacity of 1GB and costs $79.

Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update (1.5 already? Oh how the time flies!) really has its heart in the right place. None of this magnanimous 720p Blu-ray playback nonsense, or any other help for the True HD impaired. No, this time around Sony is concentrating on what really matters: raking in the cash. See, the update lets you hook up a fancy little PaSoRi reader, which can pull contactless payments from your Edy money card or Felica phone to fill up your Network Wallet with relevant monies. It’s all Japan-only, of course, but perhaps one day we can be cool like our island friends. Other minor enhancements include the addition of WEP128 and WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES) for wireless security, and a few other smaller fixes. The firmware should be headed to Japanese PS3s tomorrow.

World’s first Single-chip Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM Radio solution for mobile devices announced by Broadcom

Broadcom, renowned semiconductor manufacturer, introduced the Broadcom BCM4325 single-chip connectivity chipset, which combines Bluetooth, an FM transceiver and Wi-Fi all on to a single silicon die.

The Broadcom BCM4325 chipset features radio capabilities in a new ultra-low power 65 nanometer CMOS system-on-a-chip (SoC). This makes it possible to address the growing demand for a single product that powers devices with multiple applications such as Web-browsing, instant messaging (IM), e-mail, VoIP phone calls and photo sharing, by eliminating the need to use multiple chips, since these were needed to prevent “same band” interference.

The Broadcom BCM4325 single-chip system enables integration for mobile or handheld wireless systems that feature IEEE 802.11 a/b/g (MAC, baseband and radio), support for Bluetooth 2.0 plus enhanced data rate (EDR).
Mobile handsets, media players and handheld wireless systems have made recent leaps in sophistication, enabling service providers to offer compelling applications such as web browsing, instant messaging, e-mail, advanced multimedia, VoIP phone calls, photo sharing, as well as innovative connected services like weather and personal navigation. Critical to the success of these advanced handheld devices (which are now appearing in the market) are ultra-low power solutions for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radio technologies that enable an array of connectivity options. Adding multiple additional chips to mobile devices, however, impedes the trend toward increasing compact, low-power products. Until now, integrating these technologies in a single product was challenging since multiple radios in the same band can lead to self-interference. Broadcom has solved these issues with today’s product introduction.

“Mobile handsets are rapidly evolving into the central point of personal communications, entertainment and information for large numbers of consumers,” commented Broadcom Wireless Connectivity Group’s senior vice president and general manager Robert A. Rango. “Our new Bluetooth, WiFi and FM transceiver will help to drive this evolution and enhance devices like digital music players by dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of these key wireless technologies in innovative mobile devices.”

The product is currently available for sampling to early access customers.

Microsoft has quietly flipped the switch on a new feature in Internet Explorer 7 meant to combat phishing scams.

The software giant in early January made a change on its computer systems that allowed Web sites fitted with a new type of security certificate to display a green-filled address bar in IE 7, Markellos Diorinos, a product manager for Windows at Microsoft, said in an interview.

"We have rolled out many of the parts that are required to get it working. We're coming close to the point where all the moving parts are in place," Diorinos said. Microsoft plans to promote the green bar at next week's RSA Conference in San Francisco, an annual security confab kicked off by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

The colored address bar is meant as a sign that a site can be trusted, giving Web surfers the green light to carry out transactions there. It is a new weapon in the fight against phishing scams. The green bar already appears on the secured sites of Overstock.com and VeriSign.

VeriSign has about 300 customers, including online retailer Overstock.com, who signed up for the green bar certification process, said Spiros Theodossiou, a senior product manager at VeriSign. The company plans to unveil the names of more participating Web sites at the RSA Conference, he said.

Phishing is a prevalent online scam that uses faked Web sites to trick people into giving up personal information. The scams cost businesses millions of dollars and hurt consumer trust in the Net. Nearly $2 billion in U.S. e-commerce sales are estimated to be lost in 2006 due to security concerns, according to a recent Gartner survey.

"We are including support for EV certificates in Firefox 3, but we are still investigating how we will communicate the additional information to the user," said Window Snyder, security chief at Mozilla, which coordinates development of Firefox, the most-used Web browser after IE. Firefox 3 is due in the second half of the year, Snyder said.

Representatives for Opera have said that they are waiting to see how Microsoft fares with the green bar in IE7, which last month reached over 100 million users, before adding such functionality to its browser.

Adoption of EV SSL certificates is expected to ramp up as more people become aware of the feature. "We think the adoption rate can take about six to twelve months until you hit a sweet spot where most of the high profile Web sites will have it," Cybertrust's Sys said.

Microsoft plans to make promotional material available for Web site owners to explain what the green bar means Diorinos said. "I will pop the champagne when we see widespread adoption of EV and when we start seeing users be more secure online," he said.

Microsoft Great Plains Upgrade - Version 8.0 Overview for IT Director/Controller

If you have Microsoft Great Plains as main accounting and ERP system you need to know some technical details on Great Plains version upgrade and what is going on behind the scenes, which options do you have in case of Dexterity, VBA, SQL customizations, ctree/Pervasive migration to MS SQL/MSDE. As of right now it is reasonable to upgrade to Microsoft Great Plains 8.0

Is upgrade required? Not actually, but you have to consider these factors
? Technical Support discontinuation - the old version may not be supported - currently if you are on version 6.0 - support is already discontinued. You can not have Microsoft Business Solutions help you, but obviously you have MBS partners who can still help you. If you are on Ctree or Pervasive SQL, then your support expires December, 31 2004.
? Tax Updates/Magnetic media expiration - if you have US Payroll module and depend on it with W2 and other forms - you must stay with the version, which is supported and has tax updates. If you are on Ctree or Pervasive SQL - then you will not have tax updates for these platforms at the end of 2004 and your W2s maybe inaccurate. If you have a lot of employees - you may have issues with government.
? Following the Technology and Microsoft rules - Microsoft wants you to be on the newest platform and provides you the best support when you follow this rule
? If you do have heavy customization - we recommend you to skip one version, for example if you are on version 7.5 - do not upgrade to 8.0 and wait for the next version

What is upgrade in the language of technology? Upgrade has server and client sides.
? Server side - upgrade converts tables from old format to the new one. In general words - Microsoft Business Solutions developers may change table structure, append additional fields to add new functionality, things like that. Upgrade copies the table with changes to temporary table, then drops original table, recreates it with new structure and copies all the data from temp table to the newly created one.
? Workstation side - workstation is written in Great Plains Dexterity and has Dynamics.exe - engine and DYNAMICS.DIC - dictionary. These two plus all the additional files will be replaced with the new ones. Other dictionaries, such us REPORTS.DIC and FORMS.DIC should be also upgraded and upgrade will try to deal with them automatically. In some cases modified reports (in REPORTS.DIC) could not be upgraded and need to be recreated in the new version.
What is customization upgrade? You should consider different types of customizations: Dexterity, VBA/Modifier, SQL, ReportWriter, Crystal Reports
? Dexterity Customization - being very short - Dexterity may have so called Custom Forms - these do not need upgrade - they should work as is. Then Dexterity may alter existing Great Plains forms (so-called Alternate Great Plains forms) - in this case Dexterity customization should be redone for these forms/screens. Plus additional consideration should be given to Dexterity triggers, shadow tables, etc.
? VBA/Modifier customization - Modifier allows you to modify existing Great Plains windows - it creates so called modified Great Plains windows, stored in FORMS.DIC. Usually modification is placing new buttons or fields, which in turn will be given VBA scripts (stored in DYNAMICS.VBA). VBA scripts may call something nice, like Crystal Report, or have some data access logic. Usually the old version of DYNAMICS.VBA workds with the new version. You may need to rearrange buttons on the modified form.
? SQL - you may have some stored procs for data integration, EDI or the like - if the addressed tables will be changed in the new version then you need to analyze your SQL code. The good news is - Microsoft Business Solution doesn't make a lot of changes since version 7.0, because Microsoft is now trying to merge the products it owns: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta - and so has different priorities
? ReportWriter - MBS doesn't change tables, but it keeps changing Dexterity formulas used in ReportWriter original reports - this is the problem in so-called Modified Reports upgrade - usually you have these reports modified: SOP Blank Invoice form, SOP Blank Picking ticket, etc. If report can not be upgraded - it should be redone in the new version with some exceptions.
? Crystal Reports - the nice thing about Crystal Report - id doesn't need to be upgraded (if the fields in the tables exist in the new version - which is usually true statement)
What is upgrade for third-party modules? Your Great Plains may have so-called third party modules: Mekorma, Kampdata, Horyzon, Wennsoft, Avalara, Truepay, Trinity, Intellisol to name a few
Third party modules may have their own utility for upgrade. You just need to know that your third-party is ready for the new Great Plains version - if not - you just wait and stay on the old version.

What is migration from Ctree/Pervasive.SQL 2000 to MS SQL/MSDE? MBS has migration tool. You need first to install Great Plains on SQL Server with exactly the same account/segments structure and then install migration tool (it is Dexterity chunk) on your ctree/Pervasive workstation - then, when you integrate the chunk - you will map it to target SQL-based Great Plains Company, select all system and company tables, click the button and it will move all your tables one-by-one. In the case when your Great Plains ctree/Pervasive has third parties - you need to check if the vendor has migration tool - otherwise you have to do manual move, use SQL Linked server to your legacy data

Do I need consultant? It is probably good idea to have consultant to do the upgrade. We strongly recommend you to use consultant in the following cases
? You have Dexterity customization
? You are doing migration from Pervasive/Ctree to Microsoft SQL Server/MSDE, especially when you have third-parties without migration tools
? You have a lot or ReportWriter Modified Great Plains Reports
? You have old version of Great Plains: Dynamics or eEnterprise 6.0 or prior - in this case you can not appeal to Microsoft Technical Support - it is discontinued
? Your Great Plains has more than 20 users and you have to have upgrade done over the weekend - if it fails - you have business problems
? You don't have support - in this case you have to select your Microsoft Business Solutions Partner and pay for the annual support/enhancement plan - you will get new registration key and will be ready for the upgrade

Good luck with upgrade and if you have issues or concerns - we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com
